One Chinese Muslimah !

A memoir-blog written by a Chinese Canadian Convert.

"Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception
(a deceiving thing)."
(  سورة آل عمران  , Aal-e-Imran, Chapter #3, Verse #185)

I heard this story from a dear sister of mine who's family member passed away recently. I asked her if I could share it on my blog because it truly is one of those stories that sends chills throughout your body. It serves as an important reminder first and foremost and it also reminds us about what kind of legacy do we want to leave behind when our time comes. As cliche as it always sounds, "life is too short" it is a statement that is too true and I hope that everyone can take heed to this reminder of death, the spoiler of all "fun & games."  May Allah make our last deed our best deed and may He give us the opportunity to repent to Him before it is too late. Surely His Mercy prevails His Wrath, but only to those who seek it. We should  never expect to enter Jannah without asking for it. Our stomachs will not be full with food if we just sit and stare at the fridge. Please sisters take heed to this story and remember death, it is closer to you than you can ever imagine.

Larger than life.

Larger than life, energetic, bubbly, healthy, caring, kind and helpful
are some of the qualities that people would use when they talk about
her...

All the words listed above made her the woman that she was. Not just a
woman, but a daughter, grand-daughter, cousin, niece, friend, aunt,
wife and mother.

WAS. A three letter word that can be used to tell the story of the
past- the stories that begin with life and end with death. This is her
story, and I am her voice.

In her mid 30s , at the peak of her life , loved by many, happily
married with four children (all of them no older than 12 years) -
blessings that only a Creator as great as Allah can grant to His
servants- and blessed she was.  But Allah also brought her to the peak
in her journey to The Hereafter - death. In her mid 30s, she returned
to Allah, and left her loved ones , husband and children behind.

How short her life really was...
After returning from a trip from overseas, she felt jet lagged, and
complained to her family about feeling fatigue, being tired and weak.
She didn't recover from being 'jet lagged' and those closest to her
noticed how the sudden drop in her energy levels were not normal.
After some time, the colour of her skin on certain parts of her body
showed bruising with no apparent reason, and she began experiencing
other symptoms like headaches and bodily pains - this surely was a
sign that the tiredness was not from being jet lagged.

With a check up at the doctors, she was diagnosed with AML - Acute
Myeloid Leukemia. AML starts in the bone marrow. This is the soft
inner parts of bones. With acute types of leukemia such as AML, bone
marrow cells don't mature the way they're supposed to. These immature
cells, often called blast cells, just keep building up. Without
treatment, AML can quickly be fatal. Because it's "acute," this type
of leukemia can spread quickly to the blood and to other parts of the
body such as the following organs:
•Lymph nodes
•Liver
•Spleen
•Brain and spinal cord

Her cancer lived up to its name. She would have to undergo
chemotherapy as soon as possible, for the type of leukemia that she
had really was that 'acute'. She began her chemotherapy , and after 2
weeks she began to show signs of recovery, she seemed to be getting
better. She was even permitted by the doctors to walk within the
boundaries of the hospital.

When her husband had come to visit her, she asked him to take her
home. After much persuasion, she went home. Greeted her family, and
went to her bedroom. She then returned to her living room, called her
children, embraced them in her arms, and said to them that mummy loves
them , and that she has only come home for a short while.
Subhana'Allah , one can only imagine the strength a mother must have to
say these possible last words to her children.

She returned to the hospital , and 3 days later she was found
unconscious. Scans revealed that there was slow internal bleeding that
was occurring around the brain stem. Although she received several
blood transfusions, her blood pressure was anomalous and her
temperature was fluctuating. The bleeding had spread to the rest of
her body, and after being in a coma for four days- she passed away.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raa ji oon - to Allah do we belong to and
to Him is our return. She belonged to Allah , and she returned to him.
Subhana'Allah , no one saw her death coming, especially not this soon.
Her death brought shock to many, along with sadness, heartache and
pain for her friends and family.  Subhana'Allah  , the short passing of
her life, is a reminder to us all on how short life really is. A
reminder that death is inevitable- that whether we're healthy or ill,
married or unmarried, young or old - our journey that begins in a womb
will end in a tomb, and it is only Allah who knows the details of
every single one of our journeys.

As I tell this story, I remember this from reading it somewhere :
When we are born and come into this world, the Adhan is given but
there is no Prayer. When we die and leave this world, there is a
prayer with no Adhan. Could the Adhan of our birth belongs to the
Prayer of our death? Subhana’Allah. That’s how short our life in this
dunya is!

May Allah have mercy on the soul of the one whose story I have told,
may he fill her qabr with noor and grant her forgiveness and the
highest of stages in Jannahtul Firdows. And may He have mercy on her
family, especially her children - may He grant them patience and ease
in their hearts. And lastly may Allah have mercy on us all, the Ummah
of Muhammad (Sal'Allahu Alayhi wasallam) , when we return to Him and
may He take us when he is pleased with us- Aameen.

The Breath Journey (the poem she wrote weeks before her death, Subhana'Allah)

Thank you Allah
for breathing life into me
I am on a journey
A breath journey
from my mothers womb
warm and liquid
that gave me all I needed
I was birthed into this
Dear Creator
Your magnificent womb
warm with sunshine
and blessed with rain
and charged with all that is energy
Now in this place
that knows no time
I am rebirthed into the womb of eternity
I have emerged
from myself
with myself - separate no more
A blend of movement and mystery
Mind, subconscious and soul
knowing now that you know it all
trusting that you will forever hold me
and that this breath is mine for the taking
ready to inhale it all
and without pause
LET IT GO
LET IT GO
LET IT GO ...

Yes, it's sadly that time of year again when many Muslims  get confused about their own religion and their ignorance in Tawheed and decide to water down Islam just to fit in with the kafirs and their x-mazz holiday traditionzzzz. Well, let us explore what exactly is x-mazz and where it originated from and what the scholars of ahlul sunnah say about it !!!! Let us please educate ourselves about this major shirk/kufr traditional practice and please remember, Allah is All-Knowing, All Seeing, All Hearing. If we want our duaas to be answered, then we should adhere to His religion the CORRECT way and if we want barakah (blessings) in all that we do, we should adhere to His Rulings the correct way. Please take heed to this information and remember the Day of Judgement.
The word Christmas is derived from the Old English Cristes maesse, “Christ’s Mass.”
There is no certain tradition of the date of Christ’s birth. Christian chronographers of the 3rd century believed that the creation of the world took place at the spring equinox, then reckoned as March 25; hence the new creation in the incarnation (i.e., the conception) and death of Christ must therefore have occurred on the same day, with his birth following nine months later at the winter solstice, December 25.
According to a Roman almanac, the Christian festival of Christmas was celebrated in Rome by AD 336…
The reason why Christmas came to be celebrated on December 25 remains uncertain, but most probably the reason is that early Christians wished the date to coincide with the pagan Roman festival marking the “birthday of the unconquered sun.” (natalis solis invicti); this festival celebrated the winter solstice, when the days again begin to lengthen and the sun begins to climb higher in the sky. The traditional customs connected with Christmas have accordingly developed from several sources as a result of the coincidence of the celebration of the birth of Christ with the pagan agricultural and solar observances at midwinter.
In the Roman world the Saturnalia (December 17) was a time of merrymaking and exchange of gifts. December 25 was also regarded as the birth date of the Iranian mystery god Mithra, the Sun of Righteousness. On the Roman New Year (January 1), houses were decorated with greenery and lights, and gifts were given to children and the poor. Food and good fellowship, the Yule log and Yule cakes, greenery and fir trees, and gifts and greetings all commemorated different aspects of this festive season. Fires and lights, symbols of warmth and lasting life, have always been associated with the winter festival, both pagan and Christian. Since the European Middle Ages, evergreens, as symbols of survival, have been associated with Christmas…
So as any rational person can see, there is no sound basis for Christmas, nor did Jesus (peace be upon him) or his true followers celebrate Christmas or ask anyone to celebrate Christmas, nor was there any record of anyone calling themselves Christians celebrating Christmas until several hundred years after Jesus. So were the companions of Jesus more righteously guided in not celebrating Christmas or are the people of today?
So if you want to respect Jesus, peace be upon him, as Muslims do, don’t celebrate some fabricated event that was chosen to coincide with pagan festivals and copy pagan customs. Do you honestly think God, or even Jesus himself, would approve or condemn such a thing? If you say approve, then obviously you are not interested in the truth.
We ask Allah, the One, Singular God, with no partners or sons, the God of all creation and mankind, to guide us all to the path of guidance and sincerity.
Giving and Accepting Christmas Gifts – Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih Al-Uthaymeen
The Christians’ celebrating the ‘Eid of the birth of ‘Eesaa, upon him be peace, is for them. However, it is not permissible for the Muslim to participate in their holidays. They are not to give them gifts at the time of their holidays nor is it befitting to accept their gifts from them at the time of their holidays. Nor is it permissible to sell them anything which will aid them in the celebration of their holidays; all of this is incorrect. This is because it entails being pleased with that which they are upon if the person were to do so. And being pleased with Kufr and the holidays of the disbelievers is prohibited for the Muslims.
Source
How could a Muslim celebrate Christmas and New Year’s? – By Shaykh Uthaymeen
Then what is worse than that; is some Muslims celebrate the New Year, and they glorify it and venerate it, and it is connected to the religious occasion of the Christians; which is; what? The birthday of the Messiah Eesa ibn Maryam peace be upon him. Thus celebrating New Year’s Eve, yes, in relation with the birth of the Messiah; this is rejoicing with their religious rites and practices. And rejoicing with kufr practices—if the person who is pleased with this is safe from disbelief—then it is as ibn Al Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him said in his book, ‘the ruling on the dhimmi’ it is more severe than being pleased with drinking alcohol and worshiping the cross.
Thus the affair is very dangerous O brothers. It is not permissible for the person to celebrate Christmas; if he is a Muslim. And it is not permissible for him to congratulate them for this holiday; if he is a Muslim. And it is not permissible for him to respond to this greeting if they congratulate him for this holiday; if he is a Muslim.
Subhan’Allah! Shall we congratulate them for a holiday which is considered as a religious practice? And is this anything other than being pleased with disbelief? But most of those who congratulate them do not intend to exalt their religion or practices, but rather they only intend what; to be courteous. And this is incorrect.
If someone says; I am courteous to them because they are courteous to me and they congratulate me for Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. We say: Alhamdulillah. If they congratulate you with Eid Al-Adha and Eid Al-Fitr, then they have congratulated you for legislated holiday, which Allah has made for His slaves. And it is mandatory for Eid Al-Adha and Eid Al-Fitr to be their holidays, because it is obligatory upon them to accept Islam. But if you congratulate them for Christmas then you are congratulating them for a holiday which Allah has not designated as a holiday.
Thus Christmas has no basis in history and it has no basis in the religious legislation. Eesa ibn Maryam did not command them to establish this holiday. Thus it is either that, which was entered into the religion of the Messiah as innovation and misguidance, or it was prescribed in the legislation of Eesa ibn Maryam but it has been abrogated by the legislation of Islam. Therefore it has no basis by any estimation. Because if we said it is from the innovation of the Christians and it is not from their legislation; then it is misguidance. And if we said it is from their legislation, then it has been abrogated; and to worship Allah with an abrogated religion is misguidance; thus it is misguidance by any estimation. And because it is misguidance, how is it befitting for me—while I am a Muslim—to congratulate them for it?!
And we have answered the issue of them congratulating us for our Eid and us not congratulating them for their holiday because our Eid has been legislated by Allah the Exalted; while their holiday is not legislated. This is because it has either been fabricated in their legislation or abrogated by our legislation. Thus it has no basis in any regard.

The Ruling on Participating in Christmas – by: Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah)
Question: Our brother says: He notices that some of the Muslims participate along with the Christians in the Festival of the Birth, or Christmas as they call it; he hopes for some guidance regarding that.
Answer:
It is not permissible for the Muslim male or female to participate with the Christians, the Jews, or other than them from the disbelievers in their holidays. Rather, it is obligatory to abandon that. This is because:
“He who imitates a people is from them.”
And the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) warned us against imitating them and adorning ourselves with their mannerisms. So it is upon the believing male and female to beware of that, and not to aid in the celebration of these holidays with anything. This is because they are holidays which oppose the Legislation of Allah and the enemies of Allah establish them. So it is not permissible to participate in them nor to cooperate with its people or to assist them with anything; not with (giving them) tea, coffee, or anything at all; such as utensils, and the likes. Also, Allah the Glorified says:
Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwaa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. [Al-Ma’idah 5:2]
So participating with the disbelievers in their holidays is a type of helping them upon sin and transgression. Hence, it is obligatory upon every Muslim male and female to abandon that and it is not befitting for the one who has intellect to be deceived by the people in their actions. It is obligatory to ponder over the legislation of Al-Islam and that which is has brought and to adhere to the command of Allah and His Messenger, and not to look towards the affairs of the people. For most of the creation has no concern for the Legislation of Allah. As Allah the Mighty and Majestic has said:
And if you obey most of those on earth, they will mislead you far away from Allah’s Path. [Al-An’am 6:116]
He, Glorified be He, has said:
And most of mankind will not believe even if you desire it eagerly. [Yusuf 12:103]
So the holidays which oppose the Legislation, then it is not permissible to accept them, even if the people are doing it. For the believer weighs his actions and statements, and the actions and statements of the people, by the Book and the Sunnah; the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). That which coincides with them or one of them, then it is accepted, even if the people have abandoned it.That which opposes them or one of them, then it is rejected, even if the people do it. And may Allah grant all Tawfeeq and guidance.

Greeting The Kuffaar On Their Festivals
Question: What is the ruling on congratulating the disbelievers on their Christmas celebration? And how do we respond to them if they greet us with it. And is it permissible to go to the places where they are having celebrations for that purpose. And does the person (Muslim) take a sin if he does the aforementioned without any intent? Rather he only does it being courteous, or due to shyness or due to being put in an awkward situation, or due to some other reasons. And is it permissible to resemble them in this?
Answer:
Congratulating the disbelievers on their Christmas celebration or other than that from their religious holidays is not permissible according to the consensus. As was related by Ibn Al Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, in his book “Ahkaam Ahl al-Dhimmah”, when he said: As for congratulating the disbelievers for their religious ceremonies that have kufr (disbelief) attached to it, then it is not permissible according to the consensus. For example congratulating them for their holidays or their fasts, so the person says, “May you have a bless holiday”, or he wishes them well for their holiday or something like that. So this, if the one who says it escapes from falling into kufr (disbelief), is (still) from the impermissible things. And it is on the same level as congratulating them for prostrating to the cross. Rather it is a greater sin with Allah. And it is a more severe abomination than to congratulate them for drinking alcohol and killing someone, committing illegal sexual intercourse and things of this nature. And many of the people who do not have any religion (or respect for the religion) fall into this. And he does not know the ugliness (evil) of what he has done. So whoever congratulates a person for committing sins, or bid’ah (innovations), or disbelief, then he has exposed himself to the hate, wrath (anger) of Allah.
–End of the Shaykh’s (Ibn Al Qayyim) speech may Allah have mercy upon him–
So congratulating the disbelievers on the religious holidays is not permissible, as shown by the proof brought by Ibn Al Qayyim. Because in it, (congratulating the kufar on their religious holidays) is an approval for what they are upon from their kufr ceremonies, and showing them that you are please with it. Even if the person is not pleased with the actual kufr itself, it is also not permissible for the Muslim to be pleased with kufr ceremonies, or to congratulate them for it. Because Allah the Exalted is not pleased with that, as Allah the Exalted says, “If you disbelieve, then verily, Allah is not in need of you, He likes not disbelief for His slaves. And if you are grateful (by being believers), He is pleased therewith for you.” (Chapter 39 verse 7) And the Exalted says, “This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (Chapter 5 verse 3) So congratulating them with this is not permissible whether this person is your co worker or not. So if they greet us with their holiday greeting we don’t respond to them with it, because it’s not our holiday, and they are holidays that Allah is not pleased with, and because it is something that is either innovated in their religion, or it was legislated but has since been abrogated by the deen of Islam that which Muhammad peace and blessing be upon him, was sent with to all of the creation. And He (Allah) says about it (Islam) “And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers” (Chapter 3 verse 85). And for the Muslim to accept their invitations to these occasions (holiday celebrations) is haram. (Impermissible) Because this is worst than congratulating them with it, because this would entail participating with them in this. Also it is haram for the Muslim to imitate the disbelievers by establishing celebrations for these occasions, or to exchanges gifts, or to distribute sweets, or trays of food, or to stop work or anything like this. Due to the statement of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, “Whoever imitates a people is from them.” [Narrated by Abu Dawood in al-Libaas, hadeeth 3512]
Shaykh of Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said in his book, “Follow the straight path and oppose the path to the fire”: Imitating them in some of their celebration causes happiness in their hearts for what they are upon from false hood. And it is possible that this might encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity to humiliate the weak minded. [Iqtidaa’ al-Siraat al-Mustaqeem Mukhaalifat Ashaab al-Jaheem]
And whoever does anything from this is a sinner. And it is the same whether he did it being courteous, or seeking friendship, or due to shyness, or any other reason, because this is from being deceitful in the deen of Allah. And this is from the reasons that reinforce the psyche of the disbelievers and to make them proud of their deen.
Allah is the One Whom we ask to make the Muslims feel proud of their religion, to help them adhere steadfastly to it, and to make them victorious over their enemies, for He is the Strong and Omnipotent.

“No You Too!”
If someone wishes you a merry Christmas or the like,
In response dare not say, “You too.”
For this would imply an acceptance of their disbelieving ceremonies,
Even if this is not you,
So explain to them -if you can- that you don’t celebrate such,
Only if this is what you have the time and the ability to do,
If not then draw silent and don’t reciprocate,
Whatever you do, dare not say, “You too!”

The Correct Words: To Prevent The Evil-Eye
بـسـم الله والحـمـد لله والـصلاة والـسـلام عــلى رسـول الله، وبـعـد
The reality of evil-eye:
The evil-eye is real and there is no difference between the scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaa`ah that the affliction by the evil eye is real and its existence proven.
Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
<>
“The evil eye is a fact.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5740, 5944) and Saheeh Muslim (2187), Sunan Abu Dawood (3879), Ibn Maajah (3506, 3507, 3508)]
Narrated `Abdullaah ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما: Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
<>
“The influence of an evil eyes is a fact; if anything would precede the destiny it would be the influence of an evil eye, and when you are asked to take a bath (as a cure) from the influence of an evil eye, you should take bath.” [Saheeh Muslim (2188)]
Imaam al-Nawawi رحمه الله said in Sharh Saheeh Muslim:
“In this Hadeeth there is proof of the existence of al-Qadr and it also authenticates the fact that the harm from the evil-eye is powerful.”
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
“It is an arrow, shot by the one who is jealous or (or is known) for giving evil-eye towards the one who is envied – hitting (the target) sometimes and missing it sometimes. So if it is encountered while uncovered and without protection, then the person is affected by it. But no doubt, if it is encountered while taking precaution, then it will not affect him; rather it may happen that this arrow (evil-eye) is returned back to the owner himself (i.e. the owner is affected by his own evil-eye)”. [Zaad al-Ma`aad (4/154)]
And seeking protection from the evil-eye by saying –
1.  ما شاء الله (Maa shaa’ Allaah – Whatever Allaah Wills).
2. or ما شاء الله لا قوة الا بالله (Maa shaa’ Allaah laa quwwata illaa billaah – Whatever Allaah Wills! There is no power but with Allaah).
3. or ما شاء الله تبارك الله (Maa shaa’ Allaah tabaarak Allaah – Whatever Allaah Wills, Blessed is Allaah).
- is a bid`ah.
It is spread (and has become common) among the people of today that whenever one sees in his brother that which amazes him and he wants to prevent from giving him the evil-eye, he would say: “Maa shaa’ Allaah tabaarak Allaah” or he would “Maa shaa’ Allaah laa quwwata illaa billaah”, thinking that this is the Dhikr (remembrance) which is to be said at the times of amazement to push-away (prevent) the evil-eye from his brother. And that is why, whenever you express your amazement to one of them – because of his wealth or his house or his son or his dress – and you do not say: “Maa shaa’ Allaah”, he will start fearing you that you might give him the evil-eye that which will harm his wealth or his son.
So is saying such Dhikr in similar situations legislated or is it a bid`ah?
Verily saying this Dhikr in these situations is a bid`ah, because Dhikr is `Ibaadah (worship). And `Ibaadah has – after Tawheed – two conditions which should be fulfilled for it to be accepted (by Allaah):
1. Ikhlaas (sincerity).
2. Al-Mutaabi`ah (following the Kitaab and Sunnah).
Al-Mutaabi`ah is adhering and following (the teachings of) the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and not abandoning it; doing what he صلى الله عليه وسلم did is a Sunnah and opposing that what he صلى الله عليه وسلم did is a bid`ah.
And the evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم:
<>
“Whoever innovates in this religion of ours that which is not from it, it will be rejected.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (2697) and Saheeh Muslim (4266) on the authority of `Aaishah رضي الله عنها]
<>
And in another narration it is: “He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, it will be rejected” [Saheeh Muslim (4267)]
The one who tries to follow the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in the acts of `Ibaadaat should also follow him in respect to time, place, reason, form, characteristic and number (of times). So, if a person says “Maa shaa’ Allaah” for preventing the evil-eye, then he has not followed the Sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمin respect to “the reason”. Doing an act of worship for a specific reason is not to be done except in accordance to the Dhikr which he صلى الله عليه وسلم has instructed at the time of the occurrence of such incident and (in this case) it is to say: بارك الله لك أو عليك (“Baarak Allaahu lak” or “Baarak Allaahu `alaik” meaning Allaah bless you or Allaah’s blessing be upon you).
The principle in the matter of Adhkaar (doing remembrance of Allaah) is Tawqeef (i.e. in matters of `Ibaadah, only those acts are to be done for which there is a text to support it from the Qur’aan or the Sunnah). It is not permissible for anyone to act on this bid`ah (of saying “Maa shaa’ Allaah”) only because he finds it to be good or by blindly following someone and not investigating the authenticity of it by going back to the evidences from the Book and the Sunnah and the actions of the Sahaabah رضي الله عنهم. Approving an act to be good by one’s own will (and desire) is the Madhhab of the Mu`tazilah (the deviated group which tries to interpret the Qur’aan with their own limited understanding instead of following the Salaf – allowing what they deem as good or changing the meaning of the things which they don’t understand).
So what is the legislated Dhikr for pushing-away the evil-eye?
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم made this very clear as has been mentioned in the Muwatta of Imaam Maalikرحمه الله on the authority of Muhammad Ibn Abu Umaamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf heard his father say: “My father, Sahl ibn Hunayf did a ghusl at al-Kharraar. He removed the jubbah he had on while `Aamir ibn Rabee`ah was watching, and Sahl was a man with beautiful white skin. `Aamir said to him: ‘I have never seen anything like what I have seen today, not even the skin of a virgin.’ Sahl fell ill on the spot, and his condition grew worse. Somebody went to the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم and told him that Sahl was ill, and he will not be able to go with you. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم came to him, and Sahl told him what had happened with `Aamir. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
<>
‘Why would anyone of you kill his brother? Why did you not say: “Allaah bless you?” The evil eye is true. Do wudhu for him.’ `Aamir did wudhu for him and Sahl went with the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم and there was nothing wrong with him.” [Muwatta Imaam Maalik (1972, 1973) and it is “Saheeh”]
In the statement of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: “الّا برّكت”  (Why did you not ask (Allaah’s) blessing for him?) is the clear statement on what is to be said when someone sees a thing and it amazes him and he fears of giving it an evil-eye.
And the words: “الّا برّكت” are explained in the Hadeeth which was mentioned by Mu`mar al-Azdee in his Jaami` with a “Saheeh” (authentic) chain that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
<>
“When one of you sees in him (i.e. in his brother) which amazes him, then let him supplicate (to Allaah) to bless him.” [Jaami` Mu`mar (19766)]
It was narrated that Abu Umaamah bin Sahl bin Hunaif said: `Aamir bin Rabee`ah passed by Sahl bin Hunaif when he was having a bath and said: ‘I have never seen such beautiful skin.’ Straightaway, he (Sahl) fell to the ground. He was brought to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and it was said: ‘Sahl has had a fit.’ He صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
<>
“Whom do you accuse with regard to him?” They said: `Aamir bin Rabee`ah. He صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
<>
“Why would anyone of you kill his brother? If he sees something that he likes, then let him pray for blessing for him.” Then he called for water, and he told `Aamir to perform ablution. So he (`Aamir) washed his face and his arms up to the elbows, his knees and inside his lower garment, then he صلى الله عليه وسلم told him to pour the water over him (Sahl). (One of the narrators) Sufyaan said: Ma`mar narrated from al-Zuhree: ‘And he commanded him to pour the water over him from behind.’ [Sunan Ibn Maajah (3509) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
Ibn `Abdul-Barr in “al-Tamheed” said:
““al-Tabreek” (seeking for blessing) is by saying: “تبارك الله أحسن الخالقين اللهم بارك فيه” (Tabaarak Allaahu ahsan al-Khaaliqeen, Allaahumma baarik feeh – Blessed is Allaah the best of Creators, O Allaah bless him).” [al-Tamheed (6/241 & 13/70)]
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
“The one who gave the evil-eye is commanded to say: “اللهم بارك عليه” (Allaahumma baarik `alaih – O Allaah send your blessings upon him) for pushing away this malicious condition by making a supplication, which is an act of charity for the one who has been afflicted with the evil-eye. The cure of evil is by doing its opposite.” [Zaad al-Ma`aad (4/157-158) and also in Tibb al-Nabawee (1/127)]
So the legislated Dhikr for warding off the evil-eye id the Dhikr which is proven by the apparent meaning of the Sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in the narrations which explain it, i.e. by supplicating for him for barakah as has been mentioned by Ibn al-Qayyim and Ibn Abdul-Barr in their explanation, by saying: “Allaahumma baarik feeh” or “`alaih”.
The meaning of: “الّا برّكت”. Al-Barakah (blessing) is with the meaning: prosperity and increase. And al-Tabreek: it is supplication for blessing.
Al-Suyoottee said in “al-Dibaaj”:
“al-Barakah means: requesting an increase in goodness and honor; and it is also said: (seeking for) cleansing and purification; and also: stability.”
So the meaning of the statement of the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: “الّا برّكت” is explained by the (other) statement of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: “فليدع له بالبركة” (pray for blessing for him). And this is done by saying: “اللهم بارك فيه أو عليه” (“O Allaah bless him” or “send your blessing upon him”). And the statement of the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: “الّا برّكت” does not mean that one says: “تبارك الله” (Tabaarak Allaah – Allaah is blessed) and it is not correct, because the meaning of Tabaarak Allaah is: praising and glorifying Allaah. So this statement is for revering Allaah تعالى, and it has no relation with the du`aa for barakah.
Meaning of the saying of Allaah تعالى:
{ولولا اذ دخلت جنتك قلت ما شاء الله لا قوة الا بالله}
{It was better for you to say, when you entered your garden: ‘That which Allaah wills (will come to pass)! There is no power but with Allaah!} [Surah al-Kahf (18): 39]
This aayah is a dialogue between a Believer and a kaafir. The kaafir said about his garden which Allaah تعالىhad given him:
{ما أظن أن تبيد هذه أبدا وما أظن الساعة قائمة}
{I think not that this (garden) will ever perish; And I think not the Hour will ever come} [Surah al-Kahf (18): 35-36]
for he had disbelieved in the Resurrection. So the Believer responded to his statement of kufr and urged him – that if he believes in what he said – to return back from his statement which he uttered about the garden that it will never perish, so that his (own) amazement (about his garden) goes away and that he (returns back to the) belief that it (the garden) is under the Will of Allaah and His Power, and that it is Allaah تعالى Alone (in sustaining and perishing) that garden. So he (the Believer) said:
{ولولا اذ دخلت جنتك قلت ما شاء الله}
{It was better for you to say, when you entered your garden: ‘That which Allaah wills (will come to pass)!} meaning: while believing that the goodness and the garden which you are in, are all there by the Will of Allaah and His Might and Power. He said this so that the kaafir’s belief would change towards this. The Believer’s speech with the kaafir was for calling him towards Imaan (Faith) in Allaah and to rely upon Him for his affairs and to stop him from committing Shirk and Kufr with Allaah. This dialogue was not to teach the kaafir about the Adhkaar on how to protect his garden from the evil-eye. Rescuing the religion (i.e. guiding a person towards the correct creed) takes precedence over rescuing the piece of garden from the harm (because sooner or later this world is going to perish). And Allaah تعالى said:
{والأخرة خير وأبقى}
{Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting} [Surah al-A`laa (87): 17]
Moreover, there is a consensus that a kaafir is not called towards doing the acts of `Ibaadah (worship) till he believes in Allaah, and singles Him out in his worship.
وصلي الله علي نبينا محمد وعلي اله وصحبه وسلم تسليما مزيدا
Taken from the book of Shaikh Maaher bin Dhaafer al-Qahtaanee حفظه الله :
رفع الغين عن بيان بدعية قول ما شاء الله لدفع العين
Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله:
In the event that you are afflicted by the evil eye, you should use the treatments recommended in Sharee`ah, which are:
1. Reciting ruqyah. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
<>
“There is no ruqyah except in the case of the evil eye or fever.” [Tirmidhee (2057) and Abu Dawood (3884) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
Jibreel used to do ruqyah for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and say:
<>
“Bismillaahi arqeeka min kulli shay’in yu’dheeka, min sharri kulli nafsin aw `aynin haasid Allaahu yashfeek, bismillaahi arqeek (In the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allaah heal you, in the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you).” [Sunan Tirmidhee (972) and Sunan Ibn Maajah (3523) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
2. Asking the person who has put the evil eye on another to wash, as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلمcommanded `Aamir ibn Rabee`ah to do in the Hadeeth quoted above. Then the water should be poured over the one who has been afflicted.
With regard to taking his waste, such as his urine and stools, there is no basis for doing so; the same applies to taking any of his belongings. Rather what is narrated is that which is mentioned above, washing his limbs and washing inside his garment, or likewise washing inside his headgear and garments. And Allaah knows best.
3. There is nothing wrong with taking precautions against the evil eye before it happens, and this does not contradict the idea of tawakkul (putting one’s trust in Allaah). In fact this is tawakkul, because tawakkul means putting one’s trust in Allaah whilst also implementing the means that have been permitted or enjoined. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to seek refuge for al-Hasan and al-Husayn and say:
<>
“U`eedhukumaa bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammaati min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli `aynin laammah (I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allaah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye).” [Sunan al-Tirmidhee (2060), Sunan Abu Dawood (4737) and Sunan Ibn Maajah (3525) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]. And he would say:“Thus Ibraaheem used to seek refuge with Allaah for Ishaaq and Ismaa’eel عليهم السلام.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (3371)]
[Fataawa Shaikh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (2/117–118)]
Translator’s Note:
Some additional points:
1. Weakness of the Hadeeth: Saying “Maashaa-Allaah” when you see something that amazes you:
Anas ibn Maalik رضي الله عنه narrated that Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
<>
“Whoever sees something that amazes him, let him say: “Maashaa-Allaah, Laa Quwwata illaa billaah” Hence, by doing so that person won’t be affected by the evil Eye.” [Ibn Sunni in “`Amal yaum wal-lail” (207) and Al-Haythami graded this Hadeeth as being “Dha`eef Jiddan” (extremely weak) (Majmoo` (5/109) and Shaikh al-Albaanee also graded its chain as “Dha`eef Jiddan” in “Takhreej al-kalim al-tayyib”]
2. One should also supplicate to Allaah to bless him in what He تعالى has provided him, as the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to do in du`aa al-Qunoot:
<>
“Allaahumma…wa baarik lee fee ma a`tait. (O Allaah! And bless for me in that which you have bestowed)” [Sunan Abu Dawood (1425), Sunan al-Tirmidhee (464), Sunan Ibn Maajah (1178), Sunan al-Nasa’ee (1745) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
Summary:
1. The correct is to say “Baarak Allaahu feek” or “`alaik” when you are amazed by someone. (The last word will change when there is a change in the gender or the number of people – as per the `Arabic grammar).
2. This is the apparent meaning of the Sunnah.
3. This is what the scholars, Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn `Abd al-Barr and Al-Suyoottee رحمهم الله mentioned.
4. Saying anything other than this does not qualify to prevent the evil-eye.
5. The aayah of Surah al-Kahf is a dialogue between a Believer and a kaafir, calling him towards Tawheed and not about preventing the evil-eye.
6. The Hadeeth which mentions to say: “Maashaa-Allaah” is very weak, and thus not to be acted upon.
7. One can also seek blessing for own self and can seek Allaah’s refuge for his children from the evil-eye.

Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen – When to say Masha Allah Tabarak Allah:
Fatawaa noor ‘ala adarb tape no321
Questioner:
May Allah extend your life! This is the questioner, Abu Abdullah, he says in the first question, If a person sees what amazes him, does he say Maashaa Allah Tabaarak Allah (As Allah wills, blessed is Allah!), or Maashaa Allah Tabaarak Allah Laa Quwwata illah billah (As Allah wills, blessed is Allah, there is no strength except with Allah) and are they all correct?
Answer:
All praises are due to Allah, Lord of the worlds and prayer and salutation upon our prophet, Muhammad, his family, his companions and those who follow them in goodness until the Day of Judgement.
If a person sees that which amazes (pleases) him, pertaining to his wealth, then he should say Maashaa Allah Laa Quwwata illa billah, just as in the story of the companion of the two gardens, when his companion said to him: It was better for you to say, when you entered your garden: That which Allah wills there is no power except with Allah. This is if he sees something amazing (pleasing) with his wealth.
If he sees it in other than himself then he should say Barakallahu Alaihi (May Allah bless it for him) or a statement similar to it.
And if he sees something that amazes (pleases) him from the matters of the Dunya (world) he should say: Labbaik, Innal Aish, Aishul Aakhirah, as the Prophet ( ) used to say. So he says Labbaik meaning an answer to you then he said verily the (real) life is the life of the hereafter. He makes it firm within himself at the same instance that the Dunya and whatever is within it does not remain and there is not any life in it but verily the real life is the life of the hereafter.
