One Chinese Muslimah !

A memoir-blog written by a Chinese Canadian Convert.

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions. As for what follows;
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, may peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“The believer is the mirror of the believer.” [Abu Dawud 4918 with a good chain]
Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan, may Allah preserve him, explains this hadeeth by saying:
“A mirror is that which you see yourself when you stand in front of it whether the picture is presentable or needs fixing and modificaton. When a person wishes to leave from his home, he stands in front of the mirror because there may be something that he needs to correct on himself or remove from his clothing or the like. For a person to have a pleasant appearance in front of the people is a good thing, however there is the figurative meaning of mirror that shows you your deficiencies and that is your Muslim brother/sister.
The believer is the mirror of his fellow brother. Your brother knows the mistakes and shortcomings that you may have and therefore informs you of them so accept what he tells you. This is an encouragement to accept what your brother presents to you which entails the beautification of your inward and outward appearance. Also he sees things in you that you can not see yourself. A person may think he is complete and is mistake-free whereas his sincere and genuine Muslim brother sees that he has mistakes and shortcomings thus he instructs him to rectify them. So do not restrict yourself solely to your own assumptions and considerations but consult your brother and listen to the advice he has to give.
In this hadeeth are two important matters:
1) A person should accept the advice of his sincere brother from that which he sees in him from defects and correct them.
2) It is compulsory upon the Muslim to advise his brother/sister and not remain silent about what he sees in him from defects and the like or the opposite; praising him and being phony with him by relaying to him that which isn’t true (about himself). This is deceit and treachery. “The believer is the mirror to the believer,” he sees in him his own picture and what needs perfecting and reformation.”
Translated from: ‘Tasheelul Ilmaam bi fiqhil Ahaadeeth min Bulooghil Maraam’ by Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan.

al-Tashabuh (Imitation of the Kuffar) عدم التشبه بالكفار

Bismillah ar-rahman araheem
Imitation of the Kuffar
Tape (aadam al-tashabuh bil-kuffar/عدم التشبه بالكفار )
The Sheikh, Albani (Rahimahu Allah) began with kutabtah al hajjah
Then the sheikh (Rahimahu Allah) was asked:

Q: Bismillah ar-rahman araheem, we would like a further clarification and a clearer understanding of a previous lecture given, entitled: The Ahadith of the Prophet (sallah allahu alayhi wassalam) concerning the prohibition of imitating the kufar. Jaazakum Allahu khayr.

A: The sheikh Rahimahu Allah began: We state that anything that is specific to the kufar, their culture, and their traditions is not permissible. It is not permissible for the Muslim to neither beautify himself nor take for him self anything that is specific to the kufaar. There is no doubt it is not within our capacity at this time to enter into this topic in detail or in very precise levels because the imitation (Tashabuh) is of different levels. I will give you some examples concerning what I mean so it will become clear to you.

The Muslimeen up until this day walhamdulilah, wear on their heads a certain Islamic head gear. Like wise, the disbelievers have a certain headgear which is called "Al burnata" a type of head gear worn by the kufaar. If a Muslim puts this type of head gear on his head, then he has done something prohibited and has imitated the kufaar in their way of dress, and this is not permissible. There is no doubt left in anybodies mind that understands or has come upon the ahadith of imitating the kufar, that whom so ever has put on this head gear, or has imitated the kufaar in any other way, then he has fallen into the sin and/or prohibition.

Let us take for example that a Muslim has put upon his head this head gear and continued to walk between the Muslimeen wearing it. At this point, it is known that this "Muslim" has lost his Islamic character. He has also cut off his connection between him and his brothers in Islam. It is known that upon this Muslim are rights towards his fellow Muslim brothers and upon them are rights towards him. We know within our deen we have rights amongst each other, as the Prophet (sallah allahu alayhi wassalam) explained to us the right of the Muslim upon the Muslim is five. The first thing the Prophet (sallah Allahu alayhi wassalam) noted was: If you see or come upon your brother Muslim, give him salam (The greetings of peace). When you come upon a Muslim brother that is wearing this kafir head gear instead of the Islamic head gear, one will not recognize that he is Muslim because he is wearing another people’s clothing. One might come to him (he that is wearing this kafir head gear) and think that he one of the disbelievers themselves named George, Antonio, and other names such as these. Therefore, one will not go towards him to give him salam. Although it is an obligation upon every Muslim to greet each other, this person that is imitating the kufar has lost his Islamic identity/character by putting this kafir article on himself, and did not allow the Muslim brother to differentiate between him and the kufar. Due to this, Allah (swt) raises his mercy up off of him. I say this because “Assalam” that we send upon each other is from the names of Allah (swt’s) names. As it has come in the authentic hadeeth, the name “Assalam” has been placed on the earth, therefore spread it between yourselves. When a Muslim comes upon another Muslim and gives him salam, it’s like we say in the Syrian dialect, May Allah’s name be upon you (Issim Allah alayk)”.

Due to losing his Islamic identity/character, this person will lose out on the salam that the Muslims spread between themselves. Of course this will lead to greater things, such as cutting each other off, turning away from each other, and producing hatred between one another. So the issue with this clothing is not as many of the people may imagine of it not having any effect upon the person’s Islamic identity/character. Rather, it is the opposite, everything that is apparent on the person effects that which is within him. As has come in the authentic hadith of Al-nu’maan where the Prophet (Peace be upon him) states at the end of the hadith

“…Verily within the body there is a part, if it becomes correct and rectified the body becomes correct and rectified. If it becomes corrupt, likewise the whole body becomes corrupt. Verily this body part is the heart.”

The clothing of the kufaar is corrupt and not righteous, and the one who wears this clothing will affect his heart by allowing him to take on the kafir’s personality and their ways.

Here I would like to stop and take this opportunity before I continue on into the topic.

I want to point out how the Muslimeen’s personality and character today is deteriorating continuously. Recently there has come forth something that is very strange and has effected many of the youth. It is that they wear white shirts, and in the middle of the shirt on the front or back there is some type of picture. Some of the pictures on these shirts are what they claim to be their heroes from the wrestlers and the fighters.

Recently I went to one of the masajid to pray. While I was praying, there was a young man that I saw that I know and see regularly in the masjid praying wearing a T-shirt with pictures all over it. The picture on the T-shirt was a persons figure or some type of sports athlete. He was wearing it as he was praying and walking in and out of the masjid. This has become the new fad between the youth due to our ignorance, Islamic personality, and Islamic teachings. It has been a long time since the beginning of Islam, and it seems as though the further they get away from it, the more they are losing their Islam. Where is the honor? Where is being proud of the Islamic personality and Identity, the Islamic character, the Islamic deen they hold? Where are the people persevering the Islamic traditions, which we have inherited from our fathers and them from their fathers?  Rather it is strange that a person today wears a shirt with somebody’s face on it. It is as though everything strange they come up with, it is upon us to follow and do as they do.

This just means that the Muslimeen are in the path of imitating the kufar. It is from the mercy of our Lord most high and honored is that he sent to us our Prophet and messenger Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) with a legislation that our Lord has given the description of it in his saying “Today I have completed for you your religion and have accepted Islam as your religion…”. Like wise, The Prophets (Peace be Upon Him) statement is that I have not left anything that brings you toward Allah (subhanahu wa tala) except that I have brought you to it, and I have not left anything that brings you toward the hell fire that I have not warned you from it.

One of the things that the Prophet (saw) warned us from and restricted us from doing was to keep our Islamic personality in tact and preserved by not imitating the kufar.

Now, I have given you an example which no intellectual person, or person whom has left off his desires will not accept. The example of the Muslim wearing the kafir head gear “Al birnata” on his head and walking between the Muslimeen in this fashion thus disconnecting him self from the Islamic community and society. That is if within that community or society remains that which gives it the right to still be regarded as an Islamic society.

I will give you yet another example of the effect of the Muslimeen and their imitation of the kufar. I was on my way on a trip in a train where I met a Christian priest. We had a very long debate, but I won’t talk about the whole debate for it is too long. As we were speaking, the priest criticized the Muslimeen for being extreme against wearing this “burnaata” or kafir head gear to the point that the Muslimeen criticized this man named Mustafa Kamaal for making this something mandatory in his land. This man, Mustafa Kamaal was a Turkish ruler called Atta Turk that had an issue with the Muslimeen because the Muslimeen criticized Atta turk for making it a mandatory gear for the Turkish people that they wear this kafir head gear instead of the Islamic one they previously had. Due to this man’s action of forcing this kafir head gear, unfortunately, today we still see some of our Turkish brothers dressed with this kafir head gear.

He was trying to tell me that this hat and/head gear is a universal and international form of clothing, and it would not hurt anybody to wear it. Why are you so extreme in your position? The Sheikh (rahimahu Allah) then points out that the sect of Christianity this Priest came from would normally be dressed in a long black robe with a long black hat. So the Sheikh then said, “Then there won’t be any problem for you to take off this black hat that you have on, and instead put on this white or red hat (tarboosh – A long red hat that is mainly worn in the land of Syria)”. The priest then replied by saying “of course not, I will not do that.” The priest ran away from doing such a thing, so here is my place of proof.

I then asked the Priest why he will not do it, and he told me that he cannot do that because he is a man of God and a man of religion.  I stopped the priest at that point and told him here is the difference between us, the people of Islam and you, the people of Christianity. You made yourselves into two groups, men of religion, and men of no religion. Men of religion have their own rules and from those rules are that they have a specific type of clothing. Now, when I asked you to wear this other Islamic type head gear, you refused, why? Because you want to preserve your Christian personality.

As for us, the smallest lowest Muslim that we have has the same obligations and rights as the biggest Sheikh we have. Whatever is permissible for this one is permissible for this one and whatever is prohibited for this one is prohibited for that one.
The sheikh then ended his debate with the priest by telling him, as it is not permissible for you to imitate the Muslim; it is not permissible not just for the Sheikh, but all Muslims to imitate the kafir in any way.

This issue of imitation is not a subject of worship; it is an issue of knowledge a very precise psychological social issue. Some of the scholars of social studies say that nations continue to exist only through their preserving their ways and traditions. They preserve their ways and traditions by preserving their language and their history. The Muslims unfortunately continue to waste and lose these fundamental traits upon which their Islamic personality built upon. Due to this fact it has become something that the Muslims fall into easily, and it has become of a simple matter for them to imitate the kufar.

That was my example of the Muslim wearing a “burnata”. Let me give you another example of the person that wears this thing around their neck called a tie.

What do you see this tie signifies? This tie is meaningless, except that it is clothing that the kufar wear and they have introduced it into in our lands after colonizing us. The shaytan then came along and beautified this clothing to us, so we then imitated it. Furthermore, the person that has some type of intellect should pay attention to this time that is being wasted when putting this article of clothing on. They sit in front of the mirror wasting time, minutes of the hour trying to beautify this piece of clothing that they have. In fact they feel a certain type of discomfort in it such as one of you that has been tested with the dilemma of wearing the pants and other than it from the kufar styles and clothing. In summary there is nothing meant by this except for imitating the kufar only.

It should be noted that there are levels of imitation, so the one that put on the tie is not like the one that wore the “burnata”. They are not of an equal or similar level. It is as what we used to hear from some of the Mashayikh here, the person that has put the burnata on his head has raised a flag saying,  that’s it… it’s over, I am no longer Muslim.

We will go down to another level of the certain type of clothing that the youth has been tested with and has been a general dilemma amongst them. They are the ones that wear the pants and the shirt and follow the new fashions with and designer clothing lines. One of them looks for the next outfit that is in fashion after the previous ones have gone old. It actually reminds me of a joke that used to be said about the women, but now it is said about the men. The joke is, there was a man running out with a bag on his shoulder when his brother ran into him and said, “Where are you going my brother? Why are you running so fast?” the man replied “I just got this new piece of clothing that’s in fashion for my wife and I better get it to her before it’s out of fashion and asks for the next one.” Unfortunately This joke is no longer just for the women, it has become for the young men as well. All of this that we see is something that makes it even clearer to us that the minds of the Muslimeen are in the hands of another. And these people that control their minds are not Muslims themselves.

In the end, you should know that the levels cannot be consolidated because they are so many in numbers. It is sufficient for the Muslim that he reckons himself and knows that the imitation of the kufar is anything that has come to us from the kufar yet no benefit can be found in it. Therefore, this type of simulation of them is what is considered imitation (At tashabuh).

There is another level that if the Muslim does not pay attention it then there is absolutely no benefit in asking about the different levels of imitation. This level is that the Muslim should go out of his way and have the intention to oppose the kufar. There is the imitation of the kafir, and as you have seen, it is of levels and types. But there are things in the legislation of Islam that you are asked to do in which you seek ways of opposing and being opposite to the kufar.

Even in a situation where it is not something that you own and control. The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) has benefited us his saying in the hadith that has come in Sahih Bukhari, “The jews and Christians do not dye their hair, so be opposite to them.” Since the Jews and Christians do not dye their hair when their hair becomes grey, so oh you Muslim be in opposition to them and dye your hair. The human being’s hair is going to become grey, this is the Sunnah (way) of Allah (swt) concerning his creation, and you will not find a replacement for the sunnah, the way of Allah (swt). There is no difference in this aspect between the Muslim and the kafir, the righteous and the corrupt. Everyone will have to pass by this stage that grows of age, and they will all turn grey. Even the Prophet (saw)’s hair turned grey as we know. Even though the grayness of his hair did not overwhelm his beard, rather it was the minority of his hair. With all of this, the person’s hair will become grey and change color. All of this being known to the Prophet (Peace be upon Him), he still commanded the believers and said “The Jews and Christians do not dye their hair, so be opposite to them”. The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) meant by all of this; Oppose the kufar.

So we are not just ordered not to imitate the kufar, but we are ordered to oppose the kufar and be different from them. If they wear certain clothing, we are ordered to wear a different type of clothing. Not just in our clothing, rather in our lives in general and specific, we are ordered to be different from them. It is as I have told you before; this is not an affair of uselessness that has no meaning behind it. Rather it has great meaning because the things that are apparent upon the person have an effect upon the things that are not apparent; the things are apparent upon him have an effect upon his heart. If good then good, and if evil then evil.

With these words, it is enough…. Walhamdu lilahi rab il alaameen.

Then the shaykh opened the floor up for questions.
A questioner asks about the Immama.
Shaykh answered as for the Immama it is a traditional for of head covering known to the Arabs. And it should be known that it is not true what has been narrarted in the weak and fabricated ahadith that the prayer (sallah) is seventy times better than the (sallah) with out it. Rather it is from the dress of the Arabs and it is still worn by them. But no one should believe that the Ammamah is that cover that is wrapped levels and stages and for each level on the ammamah it is an increased level in Jannah, this is not true. It is this covering we have on our heads to protect us from the heat or the cold or other than that.
Wassalmaualikum

Assalamualaikum wa Rahmatulahi wa Barakatu!

"Many Muslims are under the misconception that kufr (disbelief) occurs only when someone denies or rejects Islam totally. This is a false understanding. Disbelief is not just restricted to denial.

Disbelief occurs due to denial when someone denies Allaah or rejects the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. Or if someone rejects something that is known from the Religion by necessity, he also commits disbelief. For example, he rejects the obligation of Zakaat.

Disbelief can also occur due to an action, as is the case when someone prostrates to an idol, even if he doesn't believe in it. If someone tramples over the mushaf (copy of the Qur'an) with his feet whilst doing so intentionally, he commits disbelief.

Likewise, disbelief may occur through speech. For example, if someone reviles Allaah or reviles the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم or curses the Religion of Islaam or mocks and ridicules Allaah and His Messneger, he commits disbelief based on such speech.

Disbelief also may occur due to doubt. If someone has doubt in Allaah or about His angels or he doubts the revealed Books or Messengers or he has doubts about Paradise and the Hellfire. For example, he says:“I don’t know if there is a Paradise or not” or “…if there is a Hellfire or not?” He commits disbelief due to this doubt and uncertainty.

Disbelief may also occur due to abandonment, say for example if someone turns away from the Religion, not learning it or worshiping Allaah. Or he abandons certain obligations of Islam, such as the Prayer, or Zakaat etc.. He commits disbelief due to this abandonment.

Therefore, the things that negate and nullify one’s Islaam are many. In fact, it's plain delusion to assume that just because you uttered "laa ilaaha ill allaah" once in your lifetime, you're a permanent and guaranteed believer. Allaah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم warned us that there are ways that lead to Shirk, Kufr and rejection of Faith.

And it is for this reason, Muslim scholars from every madhhab – the Hanbalees, the Shaafi’ees, the Maalikees and the Hanafees – all of them made it mandatory to include chapters in their books on Fiqh solely devoted to this subject.

The Muslim must learn Tawheed and what opposes it, so that he does not indulge in practices and concepts that contradict the essence of Islaam. And the most dangerous and widely existing ways that breach Tawheed are the above Ten.

These are the ten nullifiers of Islam that are unanimously agreed upon by the scholars of Islam, past and present. There is no doubt about this as these are the most significant and oft occurring of the nullifiers.

First: Shirk (associating partners) in the worship of Allaah.

Second: Setting up intermediaries between a person and Allaah, calling unto them and asking intercession from them, and seeking reliance in them, has committed disbelief according to the unanimous agreement (Ijmaa’).

Third: Believing that the Mushrikeen are not disbelievers, or has doubts about their disbelief or considers their ways and beliefs to be correct, has committed disbelief.

Fourth: The belief that guidance by someone other than the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is better or that ruling by other than the rule of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is better, such as the one who prefers the judgement of the Tawaagheet (pl. of Taaghoot; false deities/religions) over the Messenger's judgement, then he is a disbeliever.

Fifth: Hating any command or anything of the Prophet's  صلى

الله عليه وسلم Message despite practicing it.

Sixth: Mocking or ridiculing any part of Islam. Mocking

Allaah's Names and Attributes or mocking the Messenger  صلى الله

عليه وسلم or the rewards and punishments are all acts of disbelief.

Seventh: Involvement in Sorcery i.e. accepting and believing in the words and spells of of sorcerers, fortune-tellers, astrologers etc..

Eighth: Supporting and assisting the Mushrikeen against the Muslims.

Ninth: Believing that it is permitted for some people to be free of

(implementing) the Sharee’ah (revealed laws) of Muhammad

Tenth: Turning away from Allaah’s Religion, not learning it

or implementing it.

It must be pointed out that there is no difference (in accountability) between the one who seriously commits any of the above acts or the one who claims to be just "joking", "playing" or "mocking"!

The only exception is when someone commits any of these acts under compulsion; even then his heart must be filled with faith and Tawheed of Allaah.

NOTE : A very important matter is the issue of declaring someone a Kaafir. This is a very grave and serious matter in Islam and it is not left for the common Muslims or heads of random groups or the like to decide.

It is to be left to the reliable scholars firmly grounded in knowledge, those who follow the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah in the context of the Salaf’s way of understanding the Deen. They are the ones who can advise or pass rulings on immense issues such as this, not the innovators and the politically and emotionally driven ones.

The common Muslims should refrain and hold themselves from making takfeer (declaring someone a kaafir) on a particular person or group of people. We must fear Allaah in this matter which had caused and is still causing deviation in the Ummah at large.

We seek refuge in Allaah from such deeds and we ask Him to make the truth clear to us all. Ameen.

For more details regarding the proofs from the Qur'an and Sunnah for these ten nullifiers, please see the following links."

Tabarruj By Dr. Saleh as-Saleh [d.1429H]
1. Tabarruj is disobedience to Allah and His Messenger [sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam]
The one who disobeys Allah and His Messenger [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] can only harm himself and can not in any way harm Allah: The Messenger [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said:
“All of my followers will enter Paradise except those who refuse.” It was asked: “O Messenger of Allah, who would refuse?” He [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said: “He who obeys me enters Paradise and he who disobeys me has refused.” [Reported by al-Bukhari]
It is reported that Mu’awiyyah [radiallahu ‘anhu] gave a sermon in Greater Syria and in it he mentioned that the Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] prohibited seven things and he named tabarruj as one of them. Musnad Imaam Ahmad 4/101
‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud [radiallahu ‘anhu] reported that the Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] used to dislike ten kinds of behaviour and he [‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud] mentioned that from amongst them is displaying and beautification which is done in an improper place.
Jalaal-ud-Deen as-Suyuti [d.911H] [rahimahullah] said that: “Tabarruj by displaying beautification is showing off to strangers and this is disliked.” This is the explanation of the meaning of ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud’s statement “improper place”, it is not the case if the beautification is done for the husband.
2. Tabarruj is a grave destructive sin
Umayymah, the daughter of Ruqayyah visited the Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] to acknowledge the message of Islam and to acknowledge that he [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] was and is the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said to her:
“I give my acknowledgement that you must not set partners to worship besides Allah, that you do not steal, commit fornication or adultery, that you do not kill your child, that you do not commit any falsehood before your hands and between your legs, that you do not wail and that you do not make tabarruj like that of jahiliyyah [pre-Islamic era].” [Reported by Ahmad ibn Hanbal in his Musnad, Shaykh Ahmad Shakir graded the chain of the hadith as “good” and stated that Imam ibn Kathir mentioned this hadith in his tafsir saying that the chain of this narration is “good”]
It’s clear that the Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] associated tabarruj [display of beauty] with grave destructive sins.
3. Tabarruj brings the curse and expulsion from the Mercy of Allah
The Messenger [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said:
“There shall be [in the later] part of my nation women who are dressed but are in fact naked. On their heads are humps like those of camels. Curse them for they are surely cursed.” [Reported by at-Tabarani, Shaykh al-Albani graded this hadith “sahih”]
4. Tabarruj is an attribute of the people of hell
The Messenger [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said:
“Of the people of Hell there are two types whom I have never seen: The one possessing whips like the tail of an ox and they flog people with them. The second one the women who would be naked in spite of their being dressed, who are seduced to wrong paths and seduce others with their hair high like humps. These women would not get into Paradise and they would not perceive its odour, although its fragrance can be perceived from such and such distance.” [Reported by Muslim]
5. Tabarruj is darkness on the Day of Resurrection
It is narrated that the Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said:
“The parable of a woman who moves with a slow sweeping motion trailing her beautified clothes performing not for her husband is like darkness of the Day of Judgement, she has or comes with no light.” [Reported by at-Tirmidhi in his Sunan, Shaykh al-Albani graded the hadith “weak”]
Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi [d.543H] [rahimahullah] said that although this hadith is weak:“…its meaning is correct because the enjoyment in disobedience is in fact torture and suffering. The meaning is that this type of woman will come on the Day of Resurrection black in darkness as if she physically originated from darkness. In contrast, what happens to be difficult and painful in performance of obedient acts is a true enjoyment because of the reward awaiting those who are obedient to Allaah and His Messenger [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam].”
The odour of the mouth of a fasting person may not be a pleasant in this world, to Allah however it is better than the odour of musk because the Muslim has obeyed Allah and performed what is due upon him from fasting. Similarly the woman wearing her hijab may be looked upon as “reactionist”, “old fashioned” or “a walking tent”, she however is the winner on the Day of Resurrection and those who mock her put themselves on a dangerous road and may be subjected to the wrath of Allah [subhanahu wa ta’ala].
6. Tabarruj is hypocrisy
The Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said:
“The best of your women is the affectionate, the fertile [in productivity], the propitious [favourable], the consultative if they fear Allah. The most evil of your women are the Mutabar’rijat [those who do at-Tabarruj [display their beauty]], the Mutakhayelat [who strut/swagger], and they are the hypocrites. Those who enter Al-Jannah [the Paradise] are like the Cough Crow.” [Reported by al-Bayhaqi in his Sunan]
The cough crow has a red beak and red legs and is rare, so the expression in the hadeeth “cough cow” indicates that the women who will enter Paradise will be few.
7. Tabarruj is disgraceful
The Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said:
“Any woman who takes of her clothes in other than her husband’s home has broken the shield between her and Allah.” [Reported by Ahmad ibn Hanbal and al-Haakim who said it is “sahih” according to the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim and adh-Dhahabi agreed]
Imam Abu Zakariya an-Nawawi [d.676H] [rahimahullah] commenting on this hadith said:
“The saying of the Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam]: ‘Any woman who takes of her clothes in other than her husband’s home’, means showing off her beauty to strangers by taking off her shield of clothes, she has broken the shield between her and Allah [subhanahu wa ta’ala].”
Allah [subhanahu wa ta’ala] stated:
“O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves [screen your private parts, etc.] and as an adornment and the raiment of righteousness, that is better…” [Al-A’raf 7:26]
So if a woman does not fear Allah and uncovers her private parts then she is breaking the shield between her and Allah, Most High, and because she uncovered and dishonoured herself and committed a grievance against her husband then Allah will uncover her shield, she will be in a scandal.
8. Tabarruj is an unchaste and disgraceful sin
The women is ‘awrah, a source of attraction, her body is not to be shown, to wear clothes that show off her body and its shape and features is disgraceful. Allah [subhanahu wa ta’ala] orders us to stay away from disgraceful sins:
“And when they commit a Faahisha [evil deed, going round the Ka’bah in naked state, every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse, etc.], they say: ‘We found our fathers doing it, and Allah has commanded us of it.’ Say: ‘Nay, Allah never commands of Faahisha. Do you say of Allah what you know not?” [Al-A’raf 7:28]
Rather, it is Shaytaan who orders such Faahisha, such disgraceful sins. Allah [subhanahu wa ta’ala] says:
“Shaytaan [Satan] threatens you with poverty and orders you to commit Fahshaa [evil deeds, illegal sexual intercourse, sins etc.]; whereas Allah promises you Forgiveness from Himself and Bounty, and Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower.” [Al-Baqarah 2:268]
The Mutabar’rijat [those who do at-Tabarruj [display their beauty]] create a sinful virus that spreads disgraceful sins amongst the Muslim society. Allah [subhanahu wa ta’ala] says:
“Verily, those who like that [the crime of] illegal sexual intercourse should be propagated among those who believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you know not.” [An-Nur 24:19]
Tabarruj is the leading course for the spread of zina [illegal sexual relations].
9. Tabarruj is a Satanic way
The story of Adam and his wife demonstrates how the enemy of Allah [i.e. Satan] was so keen to incite them to show their private parts in order to spread evil and disgraceful sins. It also shows that tabarruj of women is a primary goal for Shaytaan to achieve.
Allah [subhanahu wa ta’ala] says:
“O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves [screen your private parts, etc.] and as an adornment, and the raiment of righteousness, that is better.” [Al-A’raf 7:26]
It is very clear that Satan is the one who established the call for Tabarruj and showing off and he is the leader of those leaders who call for the liberation of women. Shaytaan in the Imam of everyone who obeys him and follows him in disobedience to Allah, Most Merciful, especially those Mutabar’rijat [those who do at-Tabarruj (display their beauty)] who harm the Muslims and deceive their youth. The Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said:
“I have not left after me any chance of turmoil more harmful to men than the harm done to them because of women.” [Reported by al-Bukhari]
Adam [‘alaihi-sallam] forgot, made a mistake, repented and asked for forgiveness from Allah and Allah accepted his repentance. The struggle between Adam’s offspring and Shaytaan continues the Devil still whispers to drive us [men and women] to disobey Allah and follow sins and there is no safeguard except in returning to Allah in good faith and repentance, remembering Allah and asking Him for His help to overcome lusts and desires.
10. Tabarruj is the way of the Jews
The Jews have an important role in the destruction of nations through fitnah, the seduction and temptation of women. The spread of tabarruj is an effective weapon of their wide spread establishments. One just has to look around to see Hollywood and famous houses of fashion, advertising, x-rated movies and clothes are all wide spread. In fact, the Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said:
“Watch out for this worldly life [safeguard yourself from its temptation] guard yourself from the allurement of women. Verily, the first trial for the people of Israel was caused by women.” [Reported by Muslim]
Their [the Jews] books also testify to this fact. In the third chapter of Isaiah it is quoted that:
“Moreover, the LORD said: ‘Because the daughters of Zion are proud and walk with heads held high and seductive eyes, and go along with mincing steps, and tinkle the bangles on their feet. Therefore the Lord will afflict the scalp of the daughters of Zion with scabs, and the LORD will make their foreheads bare’.” [Isaiah, Chapter 3, V.16-17]
Furthermore:
“In that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, headbands, crescent ornaments, dangling earrings, bracelets, veils, headdresses, ankle chains, sashes, perfume boxes, amulets, finger rings, nose rings, festal robes, outer tunics, cloaks, money purses, hand mirrors, undergarments, turbans and veils.” [Isaiah, Chapter 3, V.18-23]
Although the Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] warned against mimicking the non-believers and their ways, many Muslims don’t abide by this warning. This is a testimony for the Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] who said:
“You will tread the same path as was trodden by those before you, inch by inch and step by step, so that if they enter the hole of the lizard you will follow them into it also.” His companions asked him: “Do you mean the Jews and the Christians.” He [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] replied: “Who else?!” [Reported by Muslim]
The similarity of those women who disobey Allah and His Messenger [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] to the Jews is very evident because their response to Allah’s command was and is similar to that of the Jews:
“We have heard and disobeyed.” [Al-Baqarah 2:93]
This is unlike the response of the believing woman who would respond [to the commands of Allah] saying:
“We hear and we obey.” [Al-Baqarah 2:85]
They remember the saying of Allah [subhanahu wa ta’ala]:
“And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger [Muhammad] after the right path has been shown clearly to him and follows other than the believers’ way. We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell – what an evil destination.” [An-Nisa 4:115]
11. Tabarruj is a filthy Jahiliyyah [ignorance]
Allah [subhanahu wa ta’ala] says:
“And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance.” [Al-Ahzab 33:33]
The Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] described the times of ignorance as filthy and wicked and ordered us to reject them. Allah [subhanahu wa ta’ala] described the Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] in that:
“…he allows them as lawful at-Taiyibaat [[i.e. all good and lawful] as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them as unlawful al-Khabaa’ith [i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.].” [Al-A’raf 7:157]
The call to bring about the times of jahiliyyah is similar to the call for tabarruj, both of which are wicked ways which the Messenger [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] made unlawful. The Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said:
“Verily, ever matter of jahiliyyah is under my hate.” [Reported by Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, Ahmad and others]
Tabarruj and all forms of jahiliyyah such as false pride and haughtiness, ill thoughts about Allah, call for falsehood, setting up rivals with Allah, ruling by the laws of other than Islam, usury, etc., are all inclusive.
12. Tabarruj is an animal act
To reveal and expose of our natural behaviour to that of animals, whenever man inclines to such behaviour he starts his decline to a level lower than the level of manhood that Allah has bestowed upon him. Allah bestowed a natural inclination towards covering, preservation and safeguarding modesty, to consider the acts of display, exposition and uncovering as an act of beauty represents a corruption of the fitrah [natural disposition/inclination] and is degeneration in state and a sign of decadence and decline.
The progress of mans stability is linked to his or her covering of the body. The hijab cover is fitting to the instinct of ghareeh which draws its strength from the soul. The “so-called” liberation from the chains of covering is an instinct which draws its instincts from lusts which incites tabarruj and mixing of the sexes. The one who is satisfied with the second instinct must sacrifice the first one in order to silence the voice of the innate ghareeh in his heart in return for the “so-called” enjoyment of tabarruj and mixing. From this we understand that tabarruj is a sign of corruption of Fitrah [natural disposition/inclination], lack of bashfulness and insensitivity.
13. Tabarruj is a door to wide-spread evil
Anyone who carefully examines the Islamic texts, the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah and the lessons from history becomes convinced about the evils of tabarruj and its harms, both in religious and worldly matters, especially when it is associated with the mixing of sexes. Some of its underlying consequences are:
  1. The competition amongst the displaying women in showing of their beauty, this is seduction, and it leads to the spoiling of morality and leaves women as merchandised articles for anyone to look at.
  2. The corruption of the morality of men, especially the youth and those in adolescence, it pushes them to commit various kinds of sin. We have seen teenage kids on the corners of many streets in Europe, North America and other parts of the world roaming around smoking, at times half naked, on drugs and looking to engage in sexual relationships. Why, what happened? Many try to hide from the hard facts. The drive for lust and the materialistic life became the objective of the new generation, the Pepsi, Michael MTV Jackson generation. The result, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases!
  3. The destruction of family ties and the causing of a lack of trust between family members and the threat of divorce.
  4. The commercial abuse of women in the world of advertising, entertainment and other areas.
  5. Doing harm to women by declaring their ill intentions and evil conscience thus rendering her venerable to harm by the wicked.
  6. The spread of diseases. The Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said: “Sin did not spread in any particular nation until they openly conducted [their sins] and as a result plague and other illnesses that were not present amongst their predecessors because present amongst them.”
  7. The facilitation of the sin of zina and fornication of the eye. The Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said: “The adultery of the eye is the lustful look.”[Reported by Muslim]
  8. Tabarruj makes it difficult to lower the gaze.
  9. It justifiably brings down the Punishment of Allah and His Punishment is more severe then an atomic bomb. Allah says:
“And when We decide to destroy a town [population], We [first] send a definite order [to obey Allah and be righteous] to those among them [or We [first] increase in number those of its population] who are given the good things of this life. Then, they transgress therein, and thus the word [of torment] is justified against it [them]. Then We destroy it with complete destruction.” [Al-Isra 17:16]
The Prophet [sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam] said:
“When people see wrong or evil and they don’t change it then it is eminent that the Punishment of Allah will fall upon them.” [Reported by Abu Dawud and others]

The Obligation of Veiling
The Muslim woman must be wise and prudent in safeguarding her dignity and honour. Times are swiftly changing and a clever woman is she who protects herself and realizes her high worth and dignity as a believer, even if she trusts the same men that the Shari’ah (chronicles of Islamic Law) has outlined as potential threats to her chastity and hereafter.
Today, when dressing immodestly has become the social norm and to speak out against it may adjudge you to be a social outcast, you – the Muslim woman – must stand strong against such vicious tides. You must remember that this realm is just a realm of test, a few days that are swiftly running out as every hour passes us. Dear Sister, declare war against such a progression, a “progression” which goes against the way of some of the best women this world has ever witnessed, the female Companions of the Noble Messenger (peace be upon him). The Qur’an clearly mentions how Tabarruj (the analytical study of which is to follow shortly) is a thing of the past, an outdated, backward, ignorant and sub-human act!
And do not tabbarrajna [display] yourselves like that of the times of ignorance…[Surah al Ahzaab [33]:33]
Something that is an outdated act is now cloaked with the colour of modernism and progression. Yet, Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) have clearly spoken out against Tabarruj and this is what we are now going to look into.
‘Lisaan al Arab’ is an excellent Arabic dictionary by Ibn Mundhur, used by scholars and laymen alike. In it one can find different meanings for the various derivates of root letters. It’s absolutely amazing to read, for it opens one’s mind up to how amazing the Arabic language is…do you want to have a taste of it?
Well, let’s dive into the meaning of Tabarruj. Allah Willing, once you read it you’ll realize what it means to not do Tabarruj, in front of non-Mahrams generally and more specifically in front of the Hamuw (the brother-in-law), the one whom the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) referred to as ‘death’ for the Muslim woman.
The term ‘tabarruj’ carries two basic meanings:
1. To display, show, make apparent, raised
  • Distance between eyebrows: This is why the distance between the eyebrows is called ‘al-Baraj’, because it is so apparent to all those who look towards the face of an individual.
  • Wide Eyes: The whiteness of which is very white and the blackness of which is very black. Such eyes can’t be missed and stand out from all other features in one’s face.
  • A Specific Genus of Stars: That’s why a specific genus of stars is referred to as ‘Burooj’, because it is 1) raised, 2) apparent for onlookers. This term is mentioned in the Qur’an: By the heaven, dhaatil burooj [holding the big stars][Al Burooj [85]:1]
  • High Buildings: ‘Barj’, the plural of which is ‘Burooj’ and ‘Abraaj’, means tower/ castle. This is because such high buildings can’t be missed, as they tower above the rest. As mentioned in the Qur’an: Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in buroojin mushayyidah (fortresses built up strong and high) [An-Nisa’ [4]:78]
That is why ‘a woman’s playing up her charms’ (refer to Hans Wehr) comes under this meaning. Because she makes an outward and apparent show of her beauty, intentionally wanting others to look her way.
2. To adorn herself, make herself pretty ( personal side note: like our famous fashion hijabi bloggette'z ..no names needed- just google "hijabi bloggers" and you will find a thousand listings of these "famous" personalities)
Ibn Mundhur writes in ‘Lisaan al Arab’ regarding the term ‘at-Tabarruj’:
‘The woman making her Zeenah and Mahaasin apparent to men.’ And: ‘To make apparent the Zeenah to strangers (li an-naas al-ajaanib), and that is blameworthy. But (if it’s done) for the husband then no (it’s not blameworthy).’
Ibn Mundhur quotes Abu Ishaaq, with regards to this verse, that:
‘making apparent the Zeenah and to Istadaa.’
In the above definitions three very important terms were used:
  1. Zeenah: embellishment, adornment, ornament, decoration.
  2. Mahaasin: (pl. of mahsanah) beauties, charms, attractions.
  3. Istadaa: to call, invoke, urge, incite, appeal, necessitate, make necessary or a requisite.
Having read this deep analysis of the term Tabarruj, I now want you to read the following verse again, but this time with deep thought and contemplation,
“And do not tabbarrajna [display] yourselves like that of the times of ignorance…”[Surah al Ahzaab [33]:33]
Now, if you have a brother-in-law specifically and if you live or come in contact with any non-mahram – (in Islam the ‘Dhu Mahaarim (sing: Mahram)’ have been clearly defined; a Mahram is a woman’s husband or a man with whom that woman cannot marry at all according to Islamic Jurisprudence. This can be due to blood relationship [such as father, son, brother, paternal uncle etc] or due to a foster relationship) – generally, I want you to recall and ask yourself honestly whether you have ever partaken in the act of ‘Tabarruj’. If so, dear Sister, it is not too late to repent and mend your ways. But time is running out as death and the Day of Judgement are swiftly catching up with man. The narrations pertaining to the punishment for Tabarruj are severe indeed and we can not afford to gain Allah’s (the Glorious and Mighty) Anger or Wrath, may Allah forgive us.
‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) used to dislike ten kinds of behaviour and he (‘Abdullah) mentioned that one of them was:
“Tabarruj by means of displaying beautification in an improper place.” [An-Nisaaee 8/141]
When the Companion Mu’aawiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a sermon in Hums (Syria), he mentioned that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) prohibited seven things, one of which was Tabarruj. [Musnad Imam Ahmad 4/101]
Umaymah, the daughter of Ruqayyah, came to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) to acknowledge the message of Islam and that Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is the Messenger of Allah (‘azza wa jall). The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said to her: “I give you my acknowledgement that you must not set partners to worship besides Allah and…that you don’t commit any falsehood by your hands and between your legs… and that you don’t make Tabarruj like that of the time of ignorance.” [Musnad Imam Ahmad 2/196]
The Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “… The most evil of your women are the Mutabarrijaat (those who do Tabarruj), the Mutakhayalaat (those who strut/swagger), and they are the hypocritical ones. Those who enter the Jannah [Paradise] (in number) are like the Cough Crow.” [Al Bayaqi] The Cough Crow has a red beak and red legs. This is an expression of metonymy indicating that few from the likes of these women enter heaven because this kind of crow is rare.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Of the people of hell there are two types whom I have never seen: The one possessing whips like the tail of an ox and they flog people with them. The second one, women who would be naked in spite of their being dressed, who are seduced [to wrong paths] and seduce others with their hair high like humps. These women would not get into the Paradise and they would not perceive its odour, although its fragrance can be perceived from such and such distance.” [Sahih Muslim]
The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “There shall be, in the latter part of my nation, women who are dressed but [in fact] naked, on their heads are humps like those of Bukht [a specific kind of camel], curse them for they are surely cursed.” [Al-Mu’jam as-Sagheer by Imam at-Tabarani p.232] The scholars say that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), in this hadith, is referring to women who wear tight clothes that shows off the shape of the body. In reality they are naked although they have clothes on them!
The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) also said: “The parable of a woman who moves with slow sweeping motion, trailing her beautified clothes, performing not for her husband, is like darkness on the day of Judgement; she has (or comes with) no light.” [At-Tirmidhi: the hadith is weak but the meaning is correct]
The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Any woman who takes off her clothes in other than her husband’s home (for an unlawful purpose), has broken the shield between her and Allah.” [Musnad Imam Ahmad and in the Mustadrak of Imam al-Hakim]
The scholars explain that what the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is referring to is any woman who shows off her beauty to strangers by taking off her shield of clothes. She ‘has broken this shield between her and Allah’ because Allah says:
O ye Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover your shame, as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness – that is the best. [Al–A’raf [7]:26]
Therefore, if a woman does not fear Allah (‘azza wa jall) and uncovers that which Allah has commanded her to cover, then she is breaking the shield between her and Allah, the Most High. Also, by uncovering and dishonouring herself she is in fact cheating and committing a treason with her husband, for marriage is a contract to be faithful to one another and one of the ways a Muslim woman is faithful to her husband is by means of safeguarding her beauty and ornaments for his eyes alone.
Allah refers to the commitment made to the institution of marriage as a meethaaqan ghaleedhaa (a solemn contract), a term otherwise used only in relation to the covenant between Allah and the Prophets [see Q 33:7].
Whether or not we are supported by our husbands, and whether or not they themselves understand the gravity of this solemn contract, we must comply, for our standing and questioning will be in front of our Lord alone. In our graves there will be no other, and when death approaches us, such difficulties will seem trivial and the relief will be, Allah Willing, magnanimous.
Dear Sister, a storm always settles down sooner or later. It may seem hard to begin covering properly and according to the Shari’ah (Islamic law) but soon Allah will turn hardship into ease.
So verily, with the hardship, there is relief. Verily, with the hardship, there is relief (i.e. there is one hardship with two reliefs, so one hardship cannot overcome two reliefs). [Surat Ash-Sharh [94]:5-6]
