My Soapbox: MIND YOUR MANNERS!

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatulahi wa barakatu my dear sisters in Islam!

I will writing a few posts pertaining to issues regarding Akhlaq and Adaab which is something that has been heavily ignored. Insha'Allah I want to take some time out to revisit these IMPORTANT issues.

There is a topic that I feel I really need to direct much attention to. It is a topic which has turned into a serious issue in today's Muslim Ummah. This is an issue that actually turns me off from befriending many Muslimahs today (which is a serious problem because I am a huge social butterfly). When I first became Muslim, I was just so eager to meet as many Muslimahs as I could, assuming that they would all be friendly, polite, modest and sharing the same goals to unite the Ummah. This however, changed, as I kept noticing that the reaction I was looking for, the same excitement I was hoping for, was indeed not the same. I kept questioning myself ,and thought, maybe it has something to do with me? Perhaps my over zealous attitude was not accepted in Islam? Or was being "too friendly" and " too nice" not encouraged in this beautiful religion?

Good manners has become foreign in many people's vocabulary. It even starts with something SO SIMPLE and BASIC. If non-Muslims can say "hey, whats up" or even a " yo whattup!" then why is it so hard for us to greet our sisters with the FULL SUNNAH GREETING?  It seems many sisters do not know the virtues of the FULL greeting "Assalmualaikum wa rahmatulahi wa barakatu" or even returning a greeting. Something so simple as a greeting of peace, has become so overlooked and under practiced in today's society. Doesn't that say something about ourselves? Many sisters have goals to become a good mother, a hafiTh (hafiz) of Qur'an, a doctor, scholar in aHadith and the list goes on. But many of us fail to educate ourselves on the fundamental basics. How can we expect to become educated yet we lack simple common courtesy? There is no excuse for lack of simple manners simply because we are not animals, but we are human beings. If you fear Allah, than you should be aware of your manners as well as your character.

Akhlaq أخلاق. What does Akhlaq means? To refresh our memory (including my own):

The definition of morals (Akhlaq) in the Arabic language: It is a term derived from the word "Khuluq" meaning the character and the nature, therefore a (wo)man's character would be his(her) qualities and his(her) morals. The definition of morals in the Shari'ah terminology: The morals are the characteristics which Allah (SWT) has ordered the Muslim to abide by when performing his(her) actions, they are the commands and prohibitions related to the qualities which the Muslim should demonstrate when performing his(her) actions be it acts of worships, transactions and others.

Remember also, “Aqeedah, Manhaj and Akhlaaq are all together, and you cannot separate them. It is necessary for the Taalibul-Ilm (Student of Islaamic Knowledge) to possess sound Aqeedah (correct Islaamic belief and creed), upon the correct Manhaj (methodology) along with good Akhlaaq and Aadaab (manners and behavior). When the Taalibul-Ilm studies Aqeedah and Manhaj, he must also study Akhlaaq and Aadaab. Fear Allah Oh Tullaabul-Ilm (Students of Islaamic Knowledge), fear Allah Oh Tullaabul-Ilm”.

Al-Waalid, Shaykhunaa Hasan Abdul-Wahhaab Marzouq Al-Bannaa, hafidhahullahu ta’aalaa.

Just because we veil and guard our adornments (well most of us do, as modesty these days is disappearing as well, which will be another topic for discussion insha'Allah!) doesn't mean we have to hide our manners does it? I mean having good manners is the BASIC fundamentals of being a practicing Muslim. What good is it if you pray the bare 5 minimum prayers a day but lack manners? What is the point of fasting when we are rude and crude?

"The best among you are those
who have the best manners and character.""

'A'isha said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'By his good character a believer can reach the same rank as someone who fasts and prays at night." [Abu Dawood]

Let's start with the issue of SPREADING SALAM. I have noticed many sisters these days, cut straight into a conversation without sending salams. Yes, we all get excited sometimes and forget (as we are only humans), once or twice, fine but I mean, the proper SUNNAH is to say the full Islamic greeting " Assalamualaikum wa Rahmatulahi wa Barakatu" and you are to respond the proper way " Walaikumassalam wa Rahmatulahi wa barakatu". "Salam" is not the proper way to greet your Muslim sister and it's so informal, you might as well say "Hey, Peace!". Don't be stingy with your greetings!

1042. Abu Hurayra said, "The most miserly of people is the one who is miserly with the greeting. The most incapable of people of people is the one who is the most incapable of supplication." {Sahih Bukhari}

Let us try to be a leader instead of a follower, and promote the beautiful greeting of peace that Allah has prescribed FOR us TO us.

I encourage us all to re-visit the Ahadith on the "proper etiquette of spreading Salams".What good is it if you can read the Qur'an and understand it yet you can't even utter the simple Islamic greeting to your fellow Muslimah neighbor? We can have all the Islamic knowledge in the world, but if we can't even practice what we learn than the efforts we are putting forth will be deemed valueless.

If I can't encourage you to spread the proper greeting of Islam then at least these Ahadith and verses from the Qur'an will (insha'Allah). Also, " Salaam" is not the Sunnah greeting, if we want more reward, then we should say the  full, complete greeting.

(Please also note, the extensive amount of rewards in spreading a simple greeting of peace upon your fellow Muslimah neighbour ! Subhana'Allah!)

986. Abu Hurayra reported that a man passed by the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, while hew as in an assembly and said, "Peace be upon you." "Ten good deeds," he said. Another man passed by and said, "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah." The Prophet said, "Twenty good deeds." Then yet another man passed by and said, "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessing," and the Prophet said, "Thirty good deeds." Then a man in the gathering got up and did not give the greeting. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "How quickly your companion forgets! When one of you comes to an assembly, he should give the greeting. If he thinks he should sit down, he sits down. When he stands up, he gives the greeting. Neither is a greater duty than the other." {Sahih Bukhari}

Allah tells us, “And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it, or (at least) return it equally” (Qur’an, 4:86)

NOTE: Narrated Abu Hurairah (Radiallahu Anhu): The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, “Allah created Adam (AS) in ‘His Image’ sixty cubits (about thirty metres) in height. When He created him, He said (to Adam), ‘Go and greet that group of angels sitting there, and listen what they will say in reply to you, for that will be your greeting and the greeting of your offspring.’ Adam (went &) said, ‘As-Salam Alaikum (i.e. peace be upon you).’ They replied, As-Salam Alaikum Wa Rahmatallah’ (i.e. peace and Allah’s mercy be upon you).’ So they increased Wa Rahmatallah’.” The Prophet (Peace be upon him) added, “So whoever will enter Paradise, will be of the shape & picture of Adam. Since then the creation of Adam’s offsprings (i.e. stature of human beings) is being diminished up to the present time.”

(Hadith No. 6227, Book of Asking Permission, Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 8).
“And those who believed and did righteous deeds, will be made to enter Gardens under which rivers flow, – to dwell therein forever, with the Permission of their Lord. Their greeting therein will be Salam.”
(Aayah 23, Surah Ibrahim, Surah 14, Holy Qur’an).

It was narrated that Abu Umamah (RA) said: Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said, “The one who is closest of people to Allah, the Most high, is the one who initiates the greeting of Salam.” (Hadith No. 5197, Book of Etiquette, Sunan Abu Dawud, Vol. 5).

Keep posted on the NEXT "Mind Your Manners" post.

A CONSTANT REMINDER (post it on your fridge if you have to):

"It is sufficient honor for those who love one another for the sake of Allah, the Almighty, men and women alike, to know that their Almighty Lord will take care of them on the Day of Judgment and will say: "Where are those who loved one another for My glory? Today I will shade them in My shade on the Day when there is no shade but Mine." (Hadith Qudsi)
